Dr. Gene Yagow Promoted to Senior Research Scientist
Dr. Gene Yagow has been promoted to the rank of Senior Research Scientist. Since joining the department as a Research Scientist in 1997, Gene has made significant contributions to our department’s research program. He has become nationally recognized for his research and outreach activities related to TMDL development and implementation and surface water quality management.
Gene has been an active participant in programs offered through the Center for Watershed Studies and while research has been his primary focus, he has demonstrated a passion and commitment to outreach activities as well.
Gene is widely known for his research with the Generalized Watershed Loading Function (GWLF) model, which is extensively used for TMDL development and watershed management. Over the past decade, Dr. Yagow has discovered and corrected several errors in the model and developed and disseminated a version of the model (GWLF2006) that allows GWLF to simulate channel erosion and urban sediment losses. He is also recognized for his leadership in the development of tools and procedures for developing TMDLs to address biological impairments of water bodies.
Dr. Yagow also makes substantial service contributions to the department and state. He is an active member of our department’s Graduate Committee and serves on the academic advisory committees of several graduate students. In addition, he serves as the faculty advisor for the Virginia Tech Student Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society and the Virginia Tech Animation Society. At the state level, he serves on the Academic Advisory Committee to Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, which is assisting the DEQ in the development of nutrient standards for state waters.
Congratulations to Gene for his achievement!
