BSE Welcomes Dr. Joanna York10/01/2008
Dr. Joanna York joined BSE as an affiliated faculty (Research Scientist) member. Dr. York received a BS degree in Environmental Science from University of Virginia and her PhD degree from Boston University Marine Program at Woods Hole, MA. Dr. York is an estuarine ecologist. Her PhD research was on stable isotopic assessment of sources and assimilation of nitrogen by estuarine phytoplankton.
For the past two years she has worked as a post-doctoral associate at University of Connecticut where she has conducted research to determine the role of microzooplankton grazers in decline of San Francisco Bay delta smelt. At Boston University, Joanna conducted field research on investigating estuarine nitrogen processing and assimilation in Waquoit Bay, MA; was involved in field research on assessing the impact of intensive shrimp farming on the food web in Urias Estuary, Mexico; conducted groundwater sampling to assess sources and magnitude of nitrogen loading to Miacomet Pond in MA; and collaborated with various groups to address the role of small streams in controlling nitrogen export from urbanizing watersheds in Baltimore. She is the author of several journal articles.
Dr. York has also taught undergraduate courses in oceanography and general biology. She is the recipient of several awards and recognitions including EPA-STAR Graduate Fellowship, Outstanding Teaching Fellow Award from Boston University, and Humes Alumni Award from Boston University. Joanna is fluent in Polish and has reading and written comprehension of French. She is also familiar with Danish and Russian languages.
Her husband, Luc Claessens joined BSE in June as a Research Scientist (highlighted in BSE Spring Newsletter) and they have a 2-year old daughter Julietta.
