SEMINAR "From Systems Biology to Biosystems Engineering" - 8/26/09

“From Systems Biology to Biosystems Engineering”

Dr. An-Ping Zeng Director of the Institute of Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering
Institute of Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering,
Hamburg University of Technology, Hamburg, Germany

Time: 11:00 – 12:00 Wednesday, August 26, 2009
Place: 311 Latham Hall

The rapid development in genome sequencing makes it now possible to sequence almost any organism of industrial interest in a very short time. Furthermore, technological and instrumental advances in functional genomics allow faster and more accurate quantitative measurements at different molecular levels (gene, mRNA, protein and metabolite) and thus the reconstruction and analysis of genome-scale metabolic and regulatory networks. These developments open up new horizons and at the same time impose challenges for systems biology and its application to industrial biotechnology. This seminar will discuss modeling and analysis of large scale metabolic and regulatory networks of organisms, illustrating the usefulness of a systems biological approach, as well as future aspects of biosystems engineering for industrial biotechnology.
