BSE Welcomes Dr. David Sample08/10/2008
Dr. David Sample will be joining our department as Assistant Professor with extension and research responsibilities in Stormwater Management. Dr. Sample will be based at the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory in Northern Virginia and will be developing a research program in stormwater management while assisting local governments and other stakeholders meet new water quality standards.
Dr. Sample received his BS and MS degrees in Environmental Engineering from University of Florida and his PhD degree in Water Resources Engineering from University of Colorado. David has been working in engineering for over 20 years in government (mainly municipal) and consulting in the states of Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Colorado. He is a registered professional engineer in seven states. Most recently, he led the Water Resources Practice in Atlanta, GA for Brown and Caldwell, a national environmental consulting firm.
Dr. Sample's research interests include integration of water conservation/irrigation and stormwater quality management in support of low impact development, performance assessment and process modeling for the design of best management practices, integrated modeling/GIS systems for water resources management, and optimization of water resources systems design. Dr. Sample is an accomplished researcher who has published several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.
David has been married for 26 years, and has 2 grown children (boys), ages 22 and 23. His wife, Laura, is a Family Physician and is also a graduate of the University of Florida and Emory Medical School. Laura and David both share a passion for Gator football. They will enjoy watching Virginia Tech beat Florida State! They also enjoy sailing, reading, Italian cooking, and bridge.
