BSE Welcomes Dr. Ryan Senger

Dr. Ryan Senger will be joining the Biological Systems Engineering department in January 2009 as an Assistant Professor in Bioprocess Engineering.

Dr. Senger has a unique background in chemistry, chemical engineering and biological engineering. His research interests are in the broad computational discipline of systems biology but include experimental exploration and validation. In addition to his considerable experimental background, he has modeling expertise in cell-culture engineering using process modeling and neural networks as well as genome scale modeling of computational biology. His expertise in bioinformatics and systems biology greatly compliment those of our current faculty in Bioprocess Engineering.

Dr. Senger received his BS degree in Chemistry from Milikin University in Illinois and His MS and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering from Colorado State University. Since completion of his PhD degree in 2005, Dr. Senger has served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Texas Tech University and Nortwestern University and more recently as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Delaware. In 2007, Dr. Senger was awarded a NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) for Individual Postdoctoral Fellows. His current research involves developing a genome scale model for the important industrial organism Clostridium acetobutylicum, which produces the solvents butanol, acetone and ethanol. Dr. Senger is an accomplished researcher who has published a large number of peer-reviewed journal articles and mentored students.

Dr. Senger will move to Blacksburg from Newark, DE and will be joined by his fiancee, Erin Doty, who is moving from Vail, CO. In their free-time, Ryan and Erin both enjoy rock climbing, biking, and hiking with their dog, Braetta. They are both college football fans and look forward to supporting Virginia Tech this season.
