Katherine More

Katy is a senior in Biological Systems Engineering with a focus in biotechnology and a minor in Biomedical Engineering. Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, she is interested in biotechnology, biopharmaceuticals, bioprocess engineering, protein engineering, and medical devices. Katy is also a member of the Virginia Tech Hightech Dance Team, and after graduation, plans to pursue a job in any of her interested fields, as well as pursue professional NBA or NFL dance teams! Katy is hoping to be a BSE mentor in the coming year to help encourage underclassmen and help them navigate this major! 

This past summer, Katy worked in the Traumatic Nerve Technologies Lab within the Biomedical Engineering department. There, she focused on the optimization of astrocyte cell growth and gene silencing. While working in the lab, Katy was able to gain lots of experience in areas such as culturing cells, working on Western Blots, and protein purification. During the school year, Katy does research in the Zhang vaccine lab. Here, she focuses on PLGA nanoparticle synthesis for an opioid vaccine. 

Aside from research, Katy is a full-time student athlete as mentioned, and performs at football, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, and baseball games. Her team also travels once a year to compete nationally against other colleges at the ESPN World Wide of Sports. Within athletics, Katy is also a member of SAAC( student athlete advisory committee), Next Level Leadership academy, and participates in numerous community events. 

Aside from academics and athletics, Katy enjoys cooking, reading, and outside activities such as hiking. She is very excited about stepping into a senior role and is hoping to become a BSE mentor to guide underclassmen!
