Kayla Mostek

Kayla Mostek is a senior in BSE from South Riding, Virginia with a focus in biotechnology and a minor in Biomedical Engineering. After graduating, they intend to improve processes in the biotech field using interdisciplinary skills.

Over the most recent summer, Kayla was a microbiology intern at Fairfax Water and assisted with testing for TC, HPC, and E. coli in drinking water. During sophomore year summer, Kayla was a systems engineering analytics intern at MITRE and tested for PFAS levels in PPT using electrochemistry.

At Virginia Tech, Kayla is the student lead for the 209 Marketplace food pantry and is active in rec sports. They are also active on campus with Uno Club and NLCF. Kayla is also involved in national and international societies, such as the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, the International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineering, and the American Water Works Association. In their free time, Kayla enjoys acrylic and digital painting, hiking, and hanging out with friends.

As a BSE mentor, Kayla can help balance studies with a social life, while excelling in both. They hope to share advice and experience on study habits, social skills, and applying to internships with incoming students. They can’t wait to meet everyone and are very excited to introduce mentees to what the BSE department has to offer.
