Megan Luczko
Meg Luczko is from Reston, Virginia, majoring in BSE with a focus in biotechnology. She is also pursuing minors in Spanish and Biomedical Engineering. She is passionate about exploring her curiosity, contributing to research at Virginia Tech, and developing the best version of herself.
This past summer, Meg worked in two research labs. Within the BSE department, she worked with Dr. Senger on the use of Raman Spectroscopy for the early detection of cancer in dogs. Meg has also worked in the Material Science Engineering (MSE) Department with Dr. Whittington, an MSE professor, on the development of a hydrogel patch for drug delivery to treat blood clots in the brain. In each of these labs she has diversified and developed her lab skills. During the past academic year, Meg has worked with Dr. Zhang and PhD student Qiaoqiao Ci on the development of a nanoparticle vaccine for the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus.
Meg is an active member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) and currently holds an executive position as President. Meg was also on the ASABE Fountain Wars Team, specifically focusing on the electrical components of the fountain. The team placed second overall at the 2025 ASABE Annual International Meeting. She is also the Academic Development Officer for her sorority.
During the spring semester of her sophomore year, Meg studied abroad in Valencia, Spain. She was enrolled in the UVA Engineering in Valencia program where she took engineering courses like mechanics of deformable bodies, dynamics, and differential equations at the Polytechnic University of Valencia. She also took courses on the ethics of engineering and research and a course studying the history and culture of Spain. She believes studying abroad is an amazing opportunity to develop soft skills like time management, adaptability, and open-mindedness.
In her free time, Meg enjoys running, drawing, and baking. She is very interested in the vast possibilities of bioprocess engineering which led her to major in Biological Systems Engineering. She is excited to be an ambassador and get the chance to meet prospective students and tell them about the amazing opportunities they could have as a Biological Systems Engineer!
